The site of OS E plorer (2001) Balmashie is shown as Winchester on OS Pathf., the name of the family who held it for some centuries, but it also appears as Polduff on OS 6 inch (1855), q.v. Balmashie is a name invented at the end of the twentieth century, and combines the common place-name element Bal- (deriving from G baile) with the Scots word mashie, a kind of golf club. The name reflects the importance of golf locally, lying as it does on the lands of the late twentieth-century St Andrews Bay Golf Resort.
