Callyons

Callyons DNO S NO518097 2 155m

Calzeane 1641 RMS ix no. 2107 [part of the lands of Nether Beley; see Beley for more details]

G coillean

‘Little wood’. Compare Pitculzean ROS (Pitcalzean 1581), which Watson analyses as ‘town of the little wood’ (1904, 51).

The name survives in Callyons Wood (OS Pathf. 374), which supplies the above NGR, although the wood itself is now gone. Callyons is also the name of the field whose centre is at NO517098.[135] The final s is probably a Sc or SSE plural generated when a larger field of this name was divided.

The name does not appear on OS 6 inch 1st edn, which shows fields where Callyons Wood now is.
