Sc foul + Sc hogger
‘Dirty hogger’. Sc hogger, sometimes hugger, is defined as ‘a coarse stocking without a foot’; also ‘an old sock-foot worn as a slipper, or over a shoe on icy roads to prevent slipping’ (CSD). The name is probably a humorous reference to the dirty or muddy ground which must have been a characteristic of this place. There is also a field called Foulhogger shown on the 1786 ‘Plan of the Kelly Estate’, Kellie CBE (RHP2153).
Foulhugger is shown as Fulhoggar on OS 1:10,000 map (2006).
