Sc cock + Sc law

‘Hill on which game-birds abound’. The eponymous law rises gently to 87 m a short distance to the east of the settlement (OS Pathf. Cocklaw), which settlement is called Muirside on OS 6 inch (1855). On this latter map the name of the hill-top woodland is Cocklaw Plantation. Apart from a narrow strip of surviving woodland to the north of the hill, nothing remains of the plantation, which is shown on the 1855 map as entirely within KBS.

The settlement of Muirside continues to appear with that name on OS maps until the OS 1:10,000 1st Metric Edition (1969–1996), when it first appears as Cocklaw.
