Formerly Wester Balmonth, it was held by the Gordon family until the mid fourteenth century (see Balmonth CBE). See also RMS iii nos. 389, 2381.

Although the OS 1:50,000 map has Gordonshall, it has been adjusted on the OS Pathf (1:25,000) to Gordanshall, probably in error, since there is no historical reason for such a change, as the early forms listed above show.
