On the Isle of May, it is described as ‘a small narrow channel ... through which fishing boats have ingress and egress at full tides’ (OS Name Book 1, 14). However, Eggeling would see it as referring to one or other of the rocks forming this channel, writing: ‘Perhaps so-called from its shape’ (1985, 250). Eggeling (loc. cit.) gives the alternative form Pilly, which is simply the local Fife Sc pronunciation of ‘pillow’. Eggeling code O.
