The Middens 1855 OS 6 inch 1st edn
Sc or SSE the + Sc or SSE midden
‘The middens, rubbish dumps’. OS Name Book has the following: ‘Three large and dangerous rocks on the east side of the Island, they are visible at High Water. Called the Middens from the circumstance of the cinders or other refuse from the Light House been [sic] thrown out here’ (1, 6).
Besides this explanation, it is possible that these rocks were named because their shape was reminiscent of a midden. Eggeling’s etymology, which invokes ‘the old word mêdn, a rock’, is bogus (1985, 249).
