? Sc chatter + Sc stane

‘Shatter- or bruise-stones’, in the sense of ‘shattered stones’, or more actively of ‘stones which could shatter (small boats, for example) or bruise (stumbling humans)’? However, Eggeling interprets the first element in line with SSE ‘chatter’: ‘The floor of the Pilgrims’ Haven and the small bays south of it. Rounded boulders moving over each other produce a clinking sound which gives the place its name’ (1985, 246). Eggeling code L.
