West Haven

West Haven ANR W NO563028 1 374 0m

Westhaven 1790s OSA 31

Sc or SSE west + Sc or SSE haven

‘Harbour to the west (of the main harbour of Anstruther)’. In OSA it is reported (p. 31) that ‘the harbour (of Anstruther) does not admit ships of burden; but a little to the westward is a creek, called Westhaven, which, at no great expence, might be made an excellent harbour.’ The name presumably implies that it was actually used as a haven or harbour at some point, with or without improvement.

It is not named on OS 6 inch (1855), though interestingly it is shown as a silted up creek (sandy dot marks).
