Steel Hall
Steel Hall # NBN S NO450038 2
Steel Hall 1775 Ainslie/Fife
? Sc steel + Sc hall
Sc steel is ‘a steep bank, spur of a hill ridge’, best known in Fife as the first element of Steelend SLN (PNF 1). The position of this settlement on the steep southern slope of Flagstaff Hill, on the road from Coates to Rires, makes this derivation highly plausible. The second element Sc hall, ‘high-status dwelling, big house’, is being used ironically here, as is so often the case in Scotland. There is no trace either of this settlement or of the old road on OS 6 inch 1st edn (1855).
