For a discussion of the first element as an existing name, and the problems associated with it, see *Aberdollo LAR, above. An alternative but less convincing explanation may be that it contains Sc dolly, ‘wooden prop (as in pit-prop), pole’, referring in some way to its fabric or mode of construction.

    The old maps show Dollybridge as a small settlement where OS Pathf. Dumbarnie now is. Dumbarnie itself (divided into Meikle and Little Dumbarnie) was the name applied to the whole of the southern part of the estate of Lahill (see Dumbarnie NBN, below).
