Clinkhill

Clinkhill # NBN S NO4304 2

Clinkhill 1775 Ainslie/Fife
Clinkhill 1827 Ainslie/East Fife

? Sc clint + Sc hill

The first element is probably Sc clint ‘cliff, crag’ (also ‘a large hard stone’, Jamieson’s Scottish Dictionary). It accurately describes the situation of Clinkhill, on a hill on the top of which is a crag, Craig Rock. Clinthill DGY (PNF 1) also shows variation between forms with k and t. Such variation will have been facilitated by the fact that in Fife t regularly becomes a glottal stop.
