Sc cauld + ? Sc raw
‘Cold row (of houses)’. This suggested derivation is based on better attested names from south of the Forth, some of whose early forms are very similar to those of Cathrie: Caldra #, Haddington ELO, close to and closely associated with Byres in the Garleton Hills (Caldrow 1546 RMS iv no. 28; Cadra 1616 Retours no. 261; Caldera 1822 Thomson Map/ELO);[262] also Caldra, Fogo BWK, which appears in Retours variously as The Cadra and Caldra (Johnston 1940, 24),[263] also Cauldra, Caldraw (Retours BWK Index Locorum). The local pronunciation of Cathrie (as if spelled Codrie, and always with the definite article), better reflects the derivation of this name than does its modern written form.
