‘Gorse or furze, or a mass of such plants’. On Blaeu (Pont) East and West Fife, Quhynns is the name of a settlement on the north side of the River Leven, immediately north-west of Balfarge. This map is seriously distorted, however, and it would appear that Balfarge represents not Balfarg MAI but Balfour MAI or Balgonie MAI. The next settlement on the river, going north-west (upstream) is Miltoun, which must represent Milton of Balgonie MAI. A similar lay-out (but with some other settlements inserted nearby) is to be found on Blaeu (Pont) East Fife.
