? G cùl or cùil

‘Back’ (in the sense of ‘place at the back’) or ‘corner, neuk’ (G cùil). The former is more likely: the latter tends in Fife to be used with a -t extension, and develop a short vowel e.g. Cults, Cult SLN. OS Pathf. also shows Coul Burn, Coulview, Coul Reservoir, Coul Mains and Coul Covert in the neighbourhood of Coul.

NMRS records a possible motte, suggested by aerial photography, at NO279029 (NO20SE 45).
