en *Whinny Hill + SSE plantation
The ridge on which the plantation is situated is said in the 1850s to have been formerly called Whinny Hill (OS Name Book 92, 46), ‘hill covered in gorse, furze’. This name has probably given rise to nearby Whinny Knowe, which appears on OS Explorer (2001), 500 m west of Whinnyhill Plantation. Whinny Knowe is presumably a modern coining; it does not appear on OS Pathf. or earlier maps.
