Roaring Hill

Roaring Hill LSL R NO252023 1 373 120m

Roaring Hill 1856 OS 6 inch 1st edn [east of Falkland road]
Roaring Hill 1920 OS 6 inch 2nd revision [east of Falkland road]

SSE roaring + SSE hill

Why this ‘small round hill partly planted with Forest trees’, as it is described in the OS Name Book (91, 32), should be so called is unclear. There was a firing range on the east side of the hill, which may account for the name: ‘Targets’ are shown here on the OS 6 inch 2nd revision map of 1920, although not on OS 6 inch 1st edn.[200]

Much of the original Roaring Hill, which lay to the east of the Falkland road, at NO254023, has been quarried away, and on modern maps such as OS Pathf. the name has been relocated to the west of the road (at the above NGR).
