‘New building or settlement’. The oldest monument in Auchtertool kirkyard is of James Burnlie, died 1604, ‘ane honest man’, who appears to have been a feuar and to have lived at Newbigging. His name appears on a document in possession of the Kirk Session, signed many years before his death (Stevenson 1908, 104).
