‘This name applies to that part of the Highway passing thro’ Devon Common, extending from the Bridge near Milldeans Sawmill eastwards to the Crossroads where the Road turn towards Kennoway [passing OS Pathf. Langdyke and Devon Quarry]. It is called from a family named Porter having resided here for many generations, the present smith’s ancestors’ (OS Name Book 16, 32). One of the OS informants for this name is ‘Thomas Porter, Smith’.
