pn Mary + SSE field

Probably named after a member of the Johnstone family of Lathrisk, on whose lands this farm lay: in the 1850s William Johnstone of Lathrisk ‘retains the farm in his own hands’ OS Name Book (13, 46). It was a common practice in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for land-owners to re-name older properties, or name newly created ones, after female family-members (see for example Annfield FAL and Annfield KTT).

OS Pathf. also shows Maryfield Burn, named as such on OS 6 inch 1st edn, which flows out of the Lomonds as the Balreavie Burn (OS Pathf.).
