The original Hilton (Sc hilltoun ‘hill farm’) is presumably that recorded in the 1320 entry as ‘le Hyltoun’, since it is described as ‘lying beside Rameldry’, and in fact Hilton Hill was part of the lands of Rameldry (see for example the estate plan of 1767 RHP23507, described under Rameldry KTT, below). The farm of Hilton then gave its name to the hill on which it stood, *Hilton Hill, which in turn became the name of the farm. OS Pathf. 373 calls this place Hilton Hill Farm.
This was also the name of a farm in CUP (PNF 4).
