Bowhill # KTT S NO348076 1 205m
Bowhill 1775 Ainslie/Fife
Bowhill 1828 SGF
Bowhill 1856 OS 6 inch 1st edn
Sc bow + Sc hill
‘Cattle hill’. SGF shows a cluster of houses on the north-west slope of the hill which rises to 215 m. A group of buildings in about the same position is marked Bowhill on 1856 OS 6 inch 1st edn. Roy (1753) shows a Knock (ultimately from G cnoc ‘hill’) in a position that seems to correspond roughly to that of Bowhill, but Clatto Hill KTT is the better candidate (q.v.).
While OS 6 inch (1856) shows Bowhill as a settlement, the OS 6 inch County Series, 1st revision (1888-1914) does not show the settlement at all, but shows Bowhill about 150 m to the west of where the settlement had been, apparently not referring to any settlement but to the road running uphill from Upper Bunzion CLT towards Down Law KTT. The name disappears entirely from the 2nd revision.
