pn Anne + SSE field

It was a common practice in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for land-owners to re-name older properties, or name newly created ones, after female members of the family, with Anne being an especially popular name at this time. For more details, see Anfield DFL PNF 1.

The name survives in OS Pathf. Annfield House (NO319078), shown simply as Annfield on OS Explorer (2001), Annfield Mains (NO322075) and Annfield Muir (NO321073). OS 6 inch 1st edn (1856) shows Annfield twice: once at OS Pathf. Annfield House, once at OS Pathf. Annfield Mains (NO322075). Furthermore it gives no name to the building at OS Pathf. Annfield Muir (NO321073); and it shows Annfield Mains at NO318075, where OS Pathf. shows a small building with no name. OS 6 inch (1856) also shows Annfield Den, close to the north-east side of Annfield House.
