? Sc skellie + Sc heid or SSE head

Sc skellie or skelly has a variety of meanings, discussed in Elements Glossary (PNF 5) under skelly. One possible meaning is ‘crooked, lop-sided’, so ‘crooked, lop-sided end or top (of some feature)’.

Its earlier name was Cotton (1856 entry above), i.e. cottar toun, which presumably inspired Cottargreen KWY (q.v.), immediately to the south-east of Skellyhead. It was a cotton or collection of farm-cottages probably on the lands of Auchtermairnie KWY.
