en Killiecrankie

Given the lack of forms earlier than 1856, and the importance in Scottish history of the battle of Killiecrankie near Pitlochry PER, which took place with great speed and terrible slaughter in 1689, it is likely that this name is a late import to FAL.

The OS Name Book gives no clue as to the origin of the name, simply describing Killiecrankie as ‘An inclosure of pasture and rough ground bounded on the West by Balloburn, on the North by Balharvie Moss and extending from there to Easter Ballo in a southerly direction. The Northern portion of this field or inclosure is interspersed with rocks and boulders’ (29, 6).

On OS Pathf. the name has been positioned to cover both the east and the west side of Ballo Burn.
