‘Striped or variegated estate’. This is almost certainly the etymology of this farm-name on the main road from Falkland to Markinch (A912), but is it an indigenous place-name? Its unusually late appearance (for a Bal-name), and its status as an inn in 1828 suggest that it is not, but rather that it was a transferred name, perhaps from Balreavie, Longmorn by Elgin MOR.
OS Pathf. also shows Balreavie Den and Balreavie Burn, which latter becomes OS Pathf. Maryfield Burn, taking its name from Maryfield KTT.
