One of several place-names in Fife of Old Testament origin, it is shown on OS Pathf. as Braeside of Cults, q.v. The biblical name was probably coined because of its proximity to the extensive limestone-quarries and kilns of Cults Hill, which would have frequently emitted flames and smoke, evoking the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by fire and brimstone (Genesis 19:24).
