? Sc wood + ? Sc burn

The house stands near the old coach road as it leaves the village of Ceres towards the west. It is not on a burn, although its lands may once have stretched down to the Ceres Burn. It is possible, therefore, that the name has been transferred from elsewhere. Millar writes (1895 i, 157): ‘Woodburne, once the property of Mr Graham Bower, representative of the old Forfarshire family of Bower of Meathie and Kinnettles, now belongs to W. O. Dalgleish Esq.’

It appears on OS Pathf. as Woodburne House, while OS 1 inch (1969 edition)’s Woodbourne House gives it a southern English cachet.
