Coals are mentioned in connection with the lands of Callange as early as 1610 (RMS vii no. 807). Gordon MS Fife (1642) shows Coale Pitts in this area. ‘Coaltown was once a thriving village, inhabited by colliers’ (NSA ix, 517), and a number of local coal seams are recorded: Luncart Coal, Make-him-rich Coal, Bowanton Coal, The Rum or Foul Parrot Coal and Balefield Coal (NSA ix, 519).
