Sc mutton + Sc hall
‘Mutton hall’; the use of Sc hall ‘hall, high-status building’ is probably facetious. In fact the whole name may be facetious. This was once a relatively frequently occurring place-name in the Scottish lowlands, with variants such as Muttonhole (containing Sc holl ‘hollow’) and Muttonbrae.
Marked as a small farm on maps up until the 1960s, it now lies under the Dunnikier housing estate at the north edge of Kirkcaldy, and not even the name has survived.
