Dronachy Burn

Dronachy Burn ADN/ATL/KGH W NT252913

Dronachy Burn 1856 OS 6 inch 1st edn.

A tributary of the Tiel Burn, which it joins near Boglily KGH, it is the main burn of the Auchtertool area. Although I have found no form earlier than the OS, the name is probably of G origin. This lack of early forms means that a variety of etymologies must be taken into consideration. These include 1. G dronn ‘hump, hump-shaped hill’, cognate with G druim ‘ridge, back’, and similar in meaning (Watson 1926, 422). This element is found more certainly in the settlement-name Dron LEU. Its meaning as a burn-name would be something like ‘burn that flows past hump-shaped hills’; and 2. G droighneach ‘thorny’, for which see Inchdairnie KGL below, referring to a burn lined with or flowing past thorn-trees.
