Sc barn + Sc hill

Part of the home-farm of Inchcolm Abbey, it was closely associated with Grange DGY # q.v. The eponymous barn refers to a monastic grange or store-house, the remains of one of which can be seen on Charles Hill DGY (q.v.), a promontory on the lands of Barnhill. The reference in Bower’s Scotichronicon to beer-brewing at Barnhill in 1421 shows that the Grange and Barnhill complex was used for a range of activities connected with victualling the abbey.

From the detailed estate plan of 1758 (RHP37878) entitled ‘Aberdour Acres and Barnhill’ it is clear that the eighteenth-century farm-house and steadings of Barnhill stood where St Colme House stands today, overlooking Barnhill Bay. Both St Colme House and Barnhill Bay are called as such on OS Pathf. and OS 6 inch 1st edn. The bay is the only feature to preserve the name, although it is often referred to locally as Primrose Bay, presumably from OS Pathf. Primrose Wood, marked but not named on OS 6 inch 1st edn.
