G druim + G dubh

‘Black ridge’. The head-name is supplied by a field-name on the lands of Wester Cash called Drumduff, centred at c.NO219096 (1909 Falkland Cropping Book). It is the middle of what is now one large field (see Wester Cash SLO for more details).

There is no proof positive linking this field-name to Drumduff of earlier record. The link is tentatively suggested here because several of the early occurrences of this name are within a Strathmiglo context, and when the barony of Drumduff first appears in 1643 (RMS ix no. 1441), it would seem to be created at least partly out of land formerly held by Scott of Balwearie, the feudal superior of the barony of Strathmiglo (see SLO Intro., The Scotts and Strathmiglo for more details). However, there is no suggestion of a settlement called Drumduff, here or anywhere else, on early maps of Fife, such as Gordon MS Fife or Ainslie/Fife. Another serious problem in assigning historical Drumduff to SLO is that it is not mentioned in what appear to be fairly comprehensive sixteenth-century lists of farms in the parish (Dunk. Rent. and Assumption), for more details of which see SLO Intro., Parish and Boundaries.
