? G creag + ? G an + ? G gall
‘Rock or crag of the (prominent) stones’ (creag nan gall)? The derivation must remain tentative due to the lack of early forms. Certainly it fits well with the topography of the place, described in the OS Name Book as ‘A rocky chasm on the NE brow of the Lomond Hills, of basaltic rock’ (27, 30).
