It seems likely, given that this name appears no earlier than the late-nineteenth or early-twentieth century, that it is a modern attempt to capture something of the antiquarian flavour of some of the local place-names and their association with Macduff, who is called ‘thane of Fife’ in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.[375] See Macduff’s Cross NBH above.
