Mc Inne’s Bank

Mc Inne’s Bank NBH C NO256209 1 351 0m

McInnes Bank 1854 OS Name Book 39, 27
    Mc Inne’s Bank 1855 OS 6 inch 1st edn

pn McInne (or McInnes) + Sc or SSE bank

The OS spelling makes the first element look like a possessive of McInne, a personal name not attested in Black 1946. It is more likely that we have here a garbling of MacInnes, a common Scottish surname, from G MacAonghuis.

The OS Name Book (38, 7) in the section on NBH, states that ‘this is a portion of Higham Bank’, which is shown in the middle of the Firth on OS 6 inch 1st edn (1855), but not on later OS maps. Indeed most of the sandbank in mid-stream which was once called Higham Bank has been washed (or dredged?) away. While the OS Name Book suggests it is in NBH, its position on the north side of the Tay suggests rather that it belonged to Errol PER.
