Eppies Taes Bank FLK C NO2922 1 351
Eppie’s Taes 1855 OS 6 inch 1st edn
pn Eppie + Sc tae + Sc bank
Eppie is a common Sc hypocorism of Euphemia; Sc tae is ‘toe’, so ‘Eppie’s toes (sand- or mud-)bank’. The identity of Eppie was already obscure in the 1850s, when the OS Name Book (39, 16) notes: ‘The two extreme eastern points of the Balmbreich Bank, the origin of this name cannot be accounted for. Nevertheless it is well known to all mariners who navigate the River Tay’. However, the taes refer to the ‘two extreme eastern points’, which can still be discerned on the modern map. It has given rise to the OS Pathf. name Lower Taes Lodge, a fishing lodge on the shore opposite Eppies Taes Bank.
