Sc carline + Sc neb

‘Old woman’s or witch’s nose’. For carline see also Carlingnose IKG. The more unusual generic element Sc neb ‘nose’ was replaced by Sc knowe(s) ‘hillock(s)’ by the time of the OS in the mid-nineteenth century. A single house on the old Aberdour to Kirkcaldy road, where it is joined by the Balbie road, right beside the BUI-KGH parish boundary, it has now disappeared, along with its name.

Carole Hough suggests a plausible development of original -neb (‘nose’) [Carlingneb 1775 Ainslie/Fife] to -knowes (‘knowes, hillocks’), via an unrecorded nose, with subsequent reinterpretation of nose as knowes, found also in some early forms of Carlingnose IKG(2009, 40–1).
