G gleann + G bealach
Although now a strange combination of Sc glen and SSE vale, it is in fact a reinterpretation of a name containing G gleann (a’) bhealaich ‘glen of (the) pass’ or ‘glen of Ballo’, Ballo itself (FAL) representing G bealach ‘pass’. Glenvale is the narrow entrance to the pass between West Lomond and the Bishop Hill.
