G lom + G –ach

‘Bare place, piece of land with sparse vegetation’, probably alluding to sparse tree-cover at the time of naming.

The bounds of the estate are described in detail in St A. Cop. no. 111 (1440): ‘oure (i.e. St Andrews Priory) landis of Lumbow, liand within our grange of Ballothin (Balone SSL), fra the litill strynde of wattir that rynnis betuix the twa Lumbowis, gangand west be the southfald dikis unto the marchis of Fedinche (Feddinch CMN), strekand est fra the marchis of Fedinche unto the marchis of the landis of the Kerenys (Cairns SSL), as ye done[309] gais to the nether end of the said litill strynde.’ The ‘litill strynde’ must refer to the burn that runs through Lumbo Den.

OS Pathf. shows Lumbo Bridge, Lumbo Den.
