The eponymous Elder Burn (not found on any printed map) takes its name from nearby Elderbank CMN (q.v.), which is named after its mid-nineteenth-century proprietor, Thomas Elder MacRitchie. The burn itself is probably the watercourse, now canalised as a drain, which flows from Elderbank CMN, past Elderburn Farm, and eventually joins the Claremont Burn at NO464147.
