The Humlie 1855 OS 6 inch 1st edn
? Sc hummel + Sc – ie
‘Small smooth or hornless one’? The primary meaning of Sc hummel is ‘hornless’, of animals, and hence ‘without projections, with a flat, level appearance, smooth’ (CSD). The ending appears to be the Sc diminutive ending. It is the name of a large rock on the shore near Cambo Sands (OS Name Book 84, 17). It is also found in the name of a rock at the mouth of the River Leven, which appears as the *Hummel Stane (le Homylstane) in 1428 (Home 1882 no. 3, for which see also PNF 5, Appendix 3).
