‘Hill on which the gallows stand or stood’. OS Name Book reports: ‘Gallows Law is a small knoll on the farm of Falside where in former times criminals were executed. On this and on the bank immediately opposite on the north side of the Kenly Water a number of stone coffins were found a few years ago.’ However, another hand has inserted below the entry, ‘This information is not to appear on the plan as it cannot be properly authenticated’ (64, 53).
