Smithfield CRA S NO605093 1 364 55m NEF
Smithfield 1855 OS 6 inch 1st edn
SSE smith + SSE field
‘Field of the smith’. OS 6 inch (1855) shows a smithy at this site. Smiddies were usually situated on main thoroughfares, and this is no exception, being on the main road between Crail and St Andrews. The importance of this road is expressed in the settlement called Gateside ‘road-side’, shown on Ainslie/Fife (1775) beside this same road just very close to Smithfield. It is surely no coincidence that also close by Smithfield is Chance Inn (q.v.), where horses could be changed.
