‘Headland or promontory of Fife’. Fife Ness was erected a burgh of barony in favour of Hope of Balcomie on 28 April 1707 (Pryde 1965 no. 461), but is already listed as a burgh in 1565, along with Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem and Elie (see early form, above).
