In 1557 *Beath-Coutts is described as lying between Lochgelly Wester ADN, Lumphinnans BGY, Stevensonsbeath, Little Raith ADN and Knocksodrum # BEA (RMS v no. 898; for full details see BEA Introduction). This would place it somewhere around NGR NT170920, within the parish of Beath east of Cowdenbeath by the Ballingry and Auchtertool boundary. One Alan Coutts (Cowttis) appears as a mair or official of the regality of Dunfermline in 1533 (Dunf. Reg. Ct. Bk. 91); Alan Coutts (Couttis) is Chamberlain of Dunfermline Abbey in 1561 (Dunf. Reg. Ct. Bk. 10); and is mentioned as a burgess of Dunfermline in 1566 (Dunf. Recs. {219}).
