Rimbleton

Rimbleton MAI S NO269011 1 373

Ribbletown 1775 Ainslie/Fife
Rimbletown 1828 SGF
Rimbleton 1856 OS 6 inch 1st edn

? + Sc toun

This appears to be same name as Remiltoun TOB (PNF 1), under which it is more fully discussed, and other similar names are listed.[250] The first element is problematic, but may derive from Sc rye-miln ‘rye mill’.

Rimbleton is not on the 1811 plan of estate of Rothes, property of the earl of Rothes RHP3640. It is in KGL according to Ainslie/Fife (1775), but the more reliable SGF (1828) seems to show it in MAI. OS 6 inch 1st edn (1865) shows Rimbleton right on MAI/KGL boundary, but definitely in MAI (supplying the above NGR), and OS Name Book discusses it under MAI, stating that it is ‘an old unoccupied cottage’ (92, 3). OS 1:25,000 (1956, reprinted 1968) does not show Rimbleton, but has Rimbleton Strip in KGL.

Probably originally a subdivision of the lands of Auchmuty MAI, it is now the name of part of Glenrothes New Town, and within KGL, covering most of the NG Square NO26 00.
