Sc byre + Sc loan

‘Grassy (cattle)-track through arable land leading to the byres’. The eponymous Byres (cattle-sheds) are mentioned several times in charters relating to the lands of Balgonie MAI from 1511 to 1627. The forms with -toun are probably the result of substitution of a commoner place-name element toun for the rarer loan.
