? G lothar + ? – in or ? – ach

This burn-name may contain G lothar (m.), cf OIr lóthar, ‘trough, vat, tub’, with a locational or adjectival ending, referring to some trough- or vat-shaped feature through which it flows, probably in its lower reaches before it joins with the Camby Burn a short distance east of Leslie parish kirk. Alternatively, although less likely, it may contain a G word derived from Old Irish loth ‘marsh, mud’, with various extensions.

For a discussion of the earliest form Zothry burne, see Balgothrie LSL, above.

It appears on OS Pathf. 373 as Lothrie Burn.
