‘Hill of Down’, Down in turn being derived from G dùn ‘hill-fort’, for details of which see Downfield KTT, above.
On Blaeu (Pont) East Fife Broun hills is the name of a settlement between Bunzion (Bunzum) CLT and Burnturk (Burne turk) KTT, so probably refers to Downfield, which is not otherwise shown on this map. It no doubt arose from a misreading of Pont’s now lost MS by Blaeu’s typesetters in Amsterdam.
